Gimnasia Stages Dramatic Comeback Against Vélez

Buenos Aires, April 3 (NA) -- Gimnasia de Mendoza staged a dramatic comeback, overturning a 0-2 deficit to defeat Vélez Sarsfield 3-2, sealed by an own goal from Mammana. The match took a drastic turn, with the visitor dominating the first half and the home side taking control in the second. Ezequiel Muñoz, Agustín Módica, and Emanuel Mammana (own goal) were the goal-scorers for the Mendoza 'Lobo', while 'Fortín' had temporarily taken the lead with goals from Florián Monzón and Manuel Lanzini. Vélez set the pace from the start with efficacy and clarity: on their first attack, Monzón opened the scoreboard with a powerful strike, and before the ten-minute mark, a collective play ended with Lanzini's goal to extend the lead. The visiting team created several chances, including another Monzón attempt that went close and a Valdés effort that tested Mondino. Gimnasia, however, struggled to respond, though they tried with shots from Módica, Andrada, Ulises Sánchez, and Lencioni, all unsuccessfully against a solid Montero. Towards the end of the first half, the home side found the consolation goal with a header from Muñoz following a free kick by Lencioni, keeping the game alive despite Vélez's control. The second half presented a different scenario: Vélez lowered their intensity, and Gimnasia took the initiative, albeit with some disorder. Módica warned of his presence with a header at the 12-minute mark, and then substitute Simoni came close to equalizing with a shot that Montero saved in two attempts; the goalkeeper again responded to a Lencini strike, holding his team firm. From a corner kick, Módica connected with a header to level the score, reflecting the Mendoza side's growth against a rival that had lost its initial solidity. In the closing moments, a harmless cross ended with Mammana pushing the ball into his own net, sparking an explosion at the Víctor Legrotaglie stadium.
